Tuesday with DIY Deanna 11.15.11

Hey there friends!  I love Do It Yourself projects!  So today, I am ecstatic to be sharing one of my favorites with you!  I got the idea off of pinterest (my most recent web addiction).

*Before I get started I would like to add a little disclaimer*  You will rarely find exact measurements for my DIY creations.  I do this so that you will free to make it your own.  Change the size, the colors, the materials, or change it all and make something totally different!

Without further adieu, let me present to you, Today's DIY Creation....

The Rustic Necklace Display

Materials:
Wooden Frame
Paint (I prefer acrylic, but spray paint works too)
Burlap
Sticks
Fabric Flowers, or any other embellishment your might prefer.
Tools:
Staple Gun
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors

Step 1 -  Choose a frame.
While rummaging through one of my moms many closets (full of LOTS of up-cycling  materials), I found this several frames.  I chose this one primarily because it was the largest and already had wall hanging hooks on it.
Step 2 - Paint the frame.
Painting the frame is optional.  I love the way black frames look on our beige walls, so I chose to paint mine black.  You may also want to consider using sand paper to rough up edges and give it a more vintage look.

Step 3 - Glue Sticks to Frame.
You will want to make sure you choose sticks that will stretch across the diameter of the frame. Be sure to glue these on the inner edge of the frame.  (see picture)   In order to secure the sticks you will want to glue the crap out of them.  FOR REAL.  Glue all the way around them, and the all around that, and so on.

Step 4 - Staple Burlap Backing
I usually staple on the burlap backing and then cut the edges.  I have found that cutting the fabric first doesn't work well for me; I always miss measure.  Be sure to stretch the fabric tight across the frame, loose fabric looks sloppy.

Step 5 - Embellish
This step is of course optional.  Feel free to glue fabric flowers, little knick-knacks, or anything you can think of to personalize your display.

Step 6  - Find a place to hang it and adorn it with jewels!
Be prepared to accept lots of compliments from your friends.  Also be prepared to accept the shocked looks on your friends faces when they found out that you made it!  And then of course feel free to refer them to the Some Small Town Girls blog for instructions!

Hope you enjoyed my DIY this week!

  1. Very cute Deanna! It's so great because everyone can get a hold of an old frame that needs a new purpose. And it can be SO customized!! A painted design on the burlap would be cute too!
